Get in the Game: Sports for Women believes in the importance of women working together in both the legal field and the community. We believe in the empowerment of women. In this spirit, GITG is a 501(c)(3) organization that donates net proceeds from GITG events to support a charitable organization (one selected each year) that focuses on girls and women in underserved populations. Suited for Change (SFC) is the 2008 GITG Community Partner. As the GITG Community Partner, Suited for Change will receive year-long financial and volunteer support from the GITG Lady Lawyers.

Founded in 1992, Suited for Change provides professional clothing and ongoing career and life skills education to low-income women in order to increase their employment and job retention potential and contribute to their economic independence. SFC’s programs address the real barriers low-income women face once they have made the decision to enter for the first time or re-enter the workforce. SFC is a founding member of The Women’s Alliance, a national organization of independent community-based “sister” organizations who provide professional attire, career skills training, and related services to low-income women seeking employment.

On February 6, 2008, GITG also teamed up with the Georgetown Women’s Basketball team, the National Women’s Law Center, NOVA United, and the WNBA Washington Mystics to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The day was a great success as the Lady Hoyas earned a well-fought victory and halftime activities featured an intergenerational exhibition basketball game featuring girls and women of all ages.

Women Empowered Against Violence (WEAVE) In 2007, the Lady Lawyers League enjoyed a wonderful partnership with Women Empowered Against Violence (WEAVE), our first community partner. GITG raised $1800 for WEAVE and conducted several partnership activities, including a Lady Lawyers Night Fundraiser with the D.C. Women’s Bar Association at the Washington Mystics game. WEAVE works closely with adult and teen survivors of relationship violence and abuse providing an innovative range of legal, counseling, economic, and educational services that lead survivors to utilize their inner and community resources, achieve safety for themselves and their children, and live empowered lives. WEAVE’s comprehensive array of services work to address survivors’ short-and long-term needs to end the cycle of abuse and help them live healthy, productive lives. Read a testimonial from Anna Lifson about the partnership with WEAVE

During the 2006 DC Fall League, GITG partnered with the Capital Area Food Bank for a food drive coinciding with the League’s first All Star Break event. Our food donation box overflowed with canned goods as the Lady Lawyers collected 65 pounds of nonperishable food items for the District’s largest food bank. The 2006 season also featured a partnership with Girls Inc., an organization dedicated to “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold” through after-school and summer educational programming, for their “Be Fit, Be Smart, Be Yourself” campaign. Lady Lawyer volunteers served as Big Sisters for the July 2006, Girls Inc. “Be Fit” summer clinic with the Washington Mystics. The Lady Lawyers led groups of girls from ages six through eighteen in clinics featuring sports, fitness and nutrition.

Finally, the Lady Lawyers League was a Community Partner for the Stanford Center on Ethics’ Title IX Today, Title IX Tomorrow Conference Conference, held at Stanford University on April 28, 2007. The event featured leading policy makers, administrators, scholars, and public officials, and provoked fresh insights and promoted sound practices surrounding gender equity in college athletics and beyond.
